Thank you for wanting to spend your precious holidays helping your neighbors who face homelessness. We appreciate your heart and intention, especially those of you who want to bring your whole family in to help.
We want to have people like you involved in helping our community grow in understanding the realities of, and the forces surrounding, homelessness and extreme poverty in our community.
The reality is we are just not set up to absorb volunteer holiday helpers.
The Haven Day Shelter is open 365 days of the year, with breakfast, laundry, showers, and various other respite services for the upwards of 60 people a day who visit our shelter. We have on-site case managers working one-on-one with our guests to link them to appropriate resources and funding that will lead to stable housing.
We rely heavily on crews of trained volunteers who take on regular shifts each week throughout the year to make all of that happen.
If you are interested in signing up to become a regular volunteer, please visit our website and sign up online as an interested volunteer. Then you will be invited to attend an orientation as a means to becoming a trained volunteer who can then take on regular shifts. Here is the link to get you started:
In addition, many individuals and groups choose to support us by organizing a supply drive and collecting vital supplies from people in their circles of influence. Below is a list of items that are currently in high demand.
- Laundry detergent.
- Warm Socks.
- Rain Ponchos.
- (New) men's and women's underwear, and undershirts (men's).
- Back packs.
- Copy paper (okay, that's for our offices. But advocacy generates a lot of paperwork!)
- Rolls of stamps (okay, also for us workers. We send out a LOT of thank you letters this time of year!)
- Paper towels.
- Toilet paper.
- Gallon-size ziplock bags (for keeping their valuables and important papers
Of course, we always welcome financial assistance as well. Just to give you an idea, it costs approximately $1200 per day to provide all the shelter services we do. We are currently hoping to earn the trust and support of an additional 25 monthly donors by the end of the year. Perhaps this is something you would consider doing either individually or as a group with your friends or neighbors or office mates.
Again, thank you for wanting to help your neighbors in need. I'm happy to answer any questions, and welcome suggestions and advice as well!
